Load a dark indoor photo, night shot, or backlit portrait, select a preset (Natural Lift, Shadow Recovery, or Backlit Fix) or fine-tune Brightness, Shadow Lift, and Contrast sliders, and download the improved image locally without uploading.
Non-clipping shadow recovery
Simply adding linear brightness washes out highlights and turns dark areas gray. Our local pixel processor applies a gamma shadow-lift curve alongside subtle contrast compensation so dark subjects become clear while bright areas stay balanced.
| Preset | Curve Adjustment | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Lift | Moderate midtone gamma lift (+22%) with +8% contrast | Indoor family photos and dim restaurants |
| Shadow Recovery | Strong shadow boost (+38%) while protecting bright highlights | Night scenes and dark foregrounds |
| Backlit Fix | Lifts silhouetted subjects standing in front of windows or sun | Backlit portraits and document scans |
How to brighten a dark photo without washing it out
Photos taken in dim rooms or against bright windows often hide facial expressions and details in the lower quarter of the tone curve. If you push a standard brightness slider too far, bright backgrounds clip to pure white and dark shadows turn muddy.
Using shadow-lift gamma adjustment raises the darkest tones proportionally more than the highlights, revealing hidden detail while keeping natural contrast.
- Select a dark JPEG, PNG, or WebP photo.
- Try the Natural Lift, Shadow Recovery, or Backlit Fix preset buttons.
- Fine-tune the Brightness and Contrast sliders to taste and download your clean copy.
Frequently asked questions
01Are my personal photos uploaded to an AI server to be brightened?+
No. Tone-curve adjustments run pixel-by-pixel inside your browser's local canvas. Your photo never leaves your device.
02Can brightening fix a completely black image?+
Shadow recovery reveals detail that was recorded at low luminance levels. If an area is pure 0,0,0 black with zero sensor data, no detail exists in those pixels.
