Check iPhone Storage, preserve pictures you cannot replace, and review the rest in small sessions. Use Octoshield to keep, queue for deletion, or vault each photo. Confirm the queue after checking the pictures and your iCloud settings.
Find out what is using space
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage to see the space used by Photos and other apps. A full phone may be dominated by videos, downloads, or messages rather than still pictures. Let the storage view guide what you tackle first.
Before removing important pictures, preserve a copy in a location you understand. iCloud Photos is a synchronized library: deleting a picture also deletes it on other devices using that library. A synced copy is not an independent archive of a deleted image.
Make a few decisions at a time
Start with easy choices: a blurry frame, an old receipt you no longer need, or a screenshot whose purpose has passed. Avoid racing through similar family photos when you are tired.
In Cleaner, swipe right for a keeper and left for the removal queue. Use up for a photo you want in the encrypted vault. The app remembers reviewed items so you can make progress across sessions. Review the queue before confirming deletion.
Separate privacy from storage savings
A vault helps you control access to a copy. It does not compress your camera roll or turn a picture into free space. If the original and vault copy both remain on the phone, both use storage.
After a confirmed deletion, check Recently Deleted in Photos. Pictures normally stay there for up to 30 days. Permanently removing them ends that recovery option, so only do this when you are certain. Storage readings can take time to update.
A few related questions
01Does a photo vault free up storage?+
Not automatically. A local encrypted copy uses storage too. Removing unwanted pictures and protecting keepers are different tasks.
02Is Octoshield an automatic duplicate remover?+
No. Cleaner lets you manually review photos with swipe gestures.
