In Photos, open Collections → Utilities → Duplicates, inspect a set, then tap Merge. Start with one set rather than merging everything immediately. Use a separate manual review for similar pictures that Apple does not group.
Check what the set actually contains
Two thumbnails can look identical while differing in crop, resolution, or edits. Open each version before merging if it records something important, such as a signed receipt or a one-off family photograph. A tiny thumbnail is a poor place to judge whether text is readable.
If keeping an exact original matters, save a verified independent copy first. An album inside the same Photos library is an organizational view, not an independent backup.
- Open Duplicates under Utilities in Photos.
- Inspect one set at full size and compare the details you want to preserve.
- Tap Merge for that set and review the result in your library.
When there is no Merge button for the pictures you mean
Photos only offers this workflow for detected duplicate sets. Different moments from the same scene, edited screenshots, and similar selfies may need manual selection. Do not delete a whole run just because the first two frames look alike.
If the entire Duplicates collection is missing, leave the phone locked and charging to allow indexing, then check again. There is no need to reset the phone to start tidying other parts of the library.
Use manual cleanup for the next pass
Octoshield fits the second pass: choose which similar shots deserve to stay, queue unwanted ones, and inspect the queue before approving deletion. The Cleaner is a review workflow; Apple Photos handles its own duplicate merge feature.
Avoid promising yourself a fixed storage saving from the number of items alone. Short screenshots and long videos use very different amounts of space. Check iPhone Storage afterward to see the actual result.
Frequently asked questions
01Should I merge every set at once?+
Only after you are comfortable with the results. For irreplaceable images, inspect a few sets and keep an independent copy before a large cleanup.
