Check Recently Deleted and Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Deleted items can remain recoverable for 30 days, optimized photos may have had small local copies, and a different app may be using most of the space. Do not keep deleting memories without checking the breakdown.
Compare bytes, not the number of pictures
Deleting 200 small screenshots may free less space than removing one long video. If Optimize iPhone Storage was already enabled, some originals were stored in iCloud while only smaller versions occupied your phone. The local saving can therefore look modest.
Write down the Photos total in iPhone Storage and the app totals above it. A large Messages attachment cache or offline download will not shrink because you cleaned Photos.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and note the largest categories.
- Open Photos → Collections → Utilities → Recently Deleted.
- Review those items and confirm that anything irreplaceable exists elsewhere before permanently removing selected files.
Recheck after the library settles
Let the phone finish its library activity and revisit the storage screen. A storage chart is not a live counter for each tap. If the number stays unexpectedly high, inspect which category remains large before taking another action.
Permanently deleting from Recently Deleted removes the recovery window. With iCloud Photos, the deletion affects the synced library too. It is a deliberate cleanup step, not a harmless refresh button.
Make the next cleanup smaller
Use Octoshield’s Cleaner to review a manageable batch rather than selecting hundreds of images from a grid. Keep your favorites, queue actual clutter, and approve only the reviewed deletion list.
Moving photos to Octoshield’s vault is a privacy choice, not cloud offloading. Vault files still occupy this iPhone, and importing can temporarily create an extra local copy. Use the vault for sensitive items, not as a way to add device capacity.
Frequently asked questions
01Will restarting create more storage?+
A restart may refresh a display or clear some temporary activity, but it does not remove your photo library or increase physical capacity. Check what actually occupies space.
