The Duplicates collection appears after Photos indexes your library and finds matches. Connect your iPhone to power and lock it so detection can run. A missing collection can also mean Apple has not found duplicates; similar-looking shots are not necessarily duplicates.
Look in Utilities before installing another cleaner
Open Photos, choose Collections, and look under Utilities for Duplicates. Older layouts arrange these collections differently. If the row is absent, repeatedly opening and closing Photos will not force a new result.
A new phone, a large import, or a recently restored library can leave analysis unfinished. Apple says detection can take a few days depending on the library and background tasks. Give the phone a charging period with the screen locked.
- Connect the iPhone to power and lock the screen.
- After background analysis has had time to run, reopen Photos and check Utilities.
- If Duplicates appears, review a set before choosing Merge.
Ten versions of the same pose may still need your decision
A burst of your dog looking at the camera contains different expressions and frames. Even if the photos feel interchangeable, that does not mean Photos will classify them as duplicate files. Do not use an empty Duplicates collection as proof that the library is already tidy.
Pick a small event or date range and keep the best expression, focus, and framing. Preserve the original until you have compared the detail that matters to you.
Review the leftovers with Octoshield
Octoshield’s Cleaner gives you a keep, delete, or vault decision for each photo. Use it for the near-identical holiday shots you want to judge yourself. It does not make Apple’s missing Duplicates collection appear or claim to repair Photos indexing.
Review the deletion queue before confirming. If you use iCloud Photos, deleting library items also affects the synced library on your other devices.
Frequently asked questions
01Does no Duplicates album mean my phone is broken?+
No. Photos may still be analyzing the library, or it may not have found any duplicates. Similar photos can remain ungrouped.
