Save the attachment to a destination you control, verify the complete file, and import a copy into private storage if needed. Saving a PDF does not remove the email attachment or change the mailbox’s access. Review mail, downloads, cloud folders, and exported copies separately.
The attachment still exists in the message
You receive a contract, statement, or personal record and save it to your phone. That creates another location to manage. The original can still be in the mailbox, accessible through other signed-in devices and the email provider’s interface.
Decide whether you need privacy from casual phone browsing, separation from a shared mailbox, or an offline copy. A file-storage choice does not solve every account-access question. Inspect the mailbox’s actual audience rather than treating Save to Files as a security action.
Save the entire attachment to a deliberate destination
Open the attachment’s sharing or save control and choose a location explicitly. Check whether it is iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or another provider. Avoid accepting a remembered folder simply because it was convenient for a previous download.
Open the saved PDF or document, count its pages, and verify any important dates or signatures. For an archive, inspect whether it contains the files you expected. Do not remove a message until you know the retained version is complete.
- Save the attachment through the email app’s available share or export control.
- Confirm the destination and its sync behavior.
- Open the saved result and verify the whole document.
- Import a private copy if required, then review the source locations separately.
Keep a short list of places to review
Check the message, its download location, any document-editor copy, and any file you exported for sharing. Deleting one copy does not automatically delete the rest. Conversely, deleting mail in a synced account can affect that message on other devices.
Keep essential records independently preserved before removing sources. Choose copies deliberately rather than multiplying them without a plan; every extra plaintext copy becomes another location you must remember later.
Keep the private reference copy in Octoshield
Use Octoshield’s file importer for a saved attachment you want behind a separate secret. Verify the imported document before managing the Files original. The app does not clean your mailbox or change the sender’s copy.
Previews can use temporary decrypted files, and exports leave vault protection. Vault files are local and excluded from backups, so retain an independent copy of essential material.
