First confirm that iCloud Photos is enabled, Optimize Storage is selected, and your library has finished uploading. Check for a full iCloud account, paused sync, or a poor connection. Optimization is managed by iOS as space is needed; it is not an instant cleanup button.
Start with the message Photos is showing you
You enabled the setting yesterday, but Photos still occupies tens of gigabytes. Before toggling anything, open Photos and inspect your account’s library status. A paused transfer, pending upload, or full cloud account explains more than the storage bar alone.
Write down the sync message and device-space figure. Avoid repeatedly signing out of iCloud or switching sync off and on. Those actions can introduce new download decisions while you are still trying to understand the original problem.
- Open Photos and inspect account or sync status.
- Check available storage in both Settings → General → iPhone Storage and your iCloud account.
- Confirm Optimize Storage is selected instead of Download and Keep Originals.
Let the library finish its work
Use a stable connection and connect the phone to power. If Photos names a reason for paused sync, address that reason first. Do not assume every pause can be solved by deleting pictures: a network restriction and a full cloud plan need different responses.
Even after upload completes, Photos retains some local originals. Recent viewing, editing, and sharing can bring originals back to the phone. The setting is behaving normally if your library remains visible and the device keeps a mix of file sizes.
If you need space before taking the next photo
Review downloads or clearly unwanted media instead of deleting essential photos as an experiment. Keep verified independent copies of irreplaceable items. If Recently Deleted contains intentional deletions, understand that permanently clearing them removes your normal recovery option.
If the status remains stuck despite sufficient cloud space and a working connection, keep the specific message and contact Apple Support. A photo-review app cannot repair iCloud synchronization or tell Apple when to optimize an original.
Make a separate cleanup pass with Octoshield
While iCloud handles optimization, Octoshield can help you decide what to keep. Review unwanted photos individually, inspect the queued choices, and approve deletion only when the selection is right. Its random batches are for manual decisions, not storage diagnostics.
Leave photos you still want in the library. Moving them into the local vault creates another on-device copy and can initially require more storage, especially when an iCloud original must download first.
Frequently asked questions
01Should optimized photos disappear from the grid?+
No. Optimization changes local file storage, not whether library items appear in Photos.
02Will a cleaner force iCloud to optimize?+
No. A cleaner can help you remove unwanted content with your approval; it does not control Apple’s optimization schedule.
