Use Archive to tidy Google Photos; use Locked Folder when you need authentication before viewing sensitive items. Archived pictures can still be found in search. Locked Folder has different visibility and backup behavior, so inspect its settings before moving your only copy.
A tidy grid and a private file solve different problems
A train-ticket screenshot can clutter a photo timeline without being especially sensitive. A personal document may need restricted viewing even if you never see it in the timeline. Decide whether the task is organization, confidentiality, or both.
Google distinguishes Archive from Locked Folder explicitly: archived items remain searchable, while Locked Folder content is excluded from ordinary search and other library surfaces. An archive label is not a password.
- Use Archive for pictures you still want to find normally but prefer out of the main view.
- Use Collections → Locked for sensitive pictures requiring authentication.
- Check Locked Folder backup and test access before removing source copies.
Edited and shared copies need separate attention
Moving an original does not necessarily move earlier edits, downloaded copies, or files saved by a recipient. Review each version that matters. If an image remains visible elsewhere, compare which copy you are looking at before assuming the move failed.
Once another person saves a shared file, changing your version does not control their saved version. This is a sharing boundary, not a missing privacy setting.
When Octoshield is a better fit
On iPhone, a separate local vault makes sense when you want sensitive files outside your ordinary photo library and behind their own secret. Octoshield supports that imported-file workflow.
It is not an Android app or a Google Photos extension. Choose Google’s backup option if cross-device recovery is your priority; choose a local vault only with a deliberate plan for essential-file exports and device replacement.
Frequently asked questions
01Can I share directly from Locked Folder?+
Google’s documented workflow requires moving an item out before sharing. Check where that exported or moved copy ends up afterward.
