Importing usually creates a copy rather than moving the only original. Repeated imports, saving an edited export, or returning a vault photo to Photos can leave multiple versions. Check where each file came from, compare quality and edits, and stop the repeat import before deleting unwanted copies.
Find the operation that created the second version
A picture appears twice after you copy a computer folder, restore an export, or save an image received in a message. The two thumbnails may represent separate files, not a display glitch. Check the date added, dimensions, file type, and visible edits where available.
The taken date and import date need not match. A recently imported picture can sit among old holiday photos while also appearing in a recently saved view. Establish whether you are looking at two library items or simply the same item through different collections.
Choose the copy that preserves what you need
Do not automatically keep the smaller or newer file. One version may preserve original resolution, another may contain your final edit, and another may be a compressed messaging copy. For Live Photos and videos, test the motion or playback before deciding.
If Photos detects an actual duplicate set, inspect it before merging. For near matches that remain separate, compare manually. Keep both when they serve different purposes, such as an unedited source and a share-ready version.
- Identify the source app, transfer, or export that created the new version.
- Compare full-size detail, dimensions, edits, and playback.
- Choose a keeper, then remove only verified unwanted copies.
Stop the same folder from being imported again
Deleting copies without changing the import habit can recreate the problem. Keep a clear record of completed transfers and inspect any app that automatically saves received media. Avoid running two migration workflows over the same source without checking the results.
A vault import also starts as a copy. Verifying the private version and approving removal of the Photos original are separate steps. Exporting that file back to Photos later can create a new library copy again.
Use Octoshield for the manual cleanup pass
After you identify the keepers in Photos, Octoshield helps you review remaining pictures and queue rejects. It does not deduplicate files automatically or guarantee that repeated imports will be detected.
For private photos, check the vault copy before confirming deletion of the source. Review Recently Deleted separately if your goal is also to remove the Photos version from view.
Frequently asked questions
01Does importing to a vault automatically erase the original?+
No. Importing creates a copy; removing a Photos original requires a separate iOS-approved deletion action.
02Are all similar thumbnails duplicates?+
No. Different edits, file formats, resolutions, and frames can look similar while containing meaningfully different data.
