Export the audio file from its source app, save and verify the complete recording, then import it into storage with the protection you need. Manage the original recording and exported Files copy separately. Importing an audio file into a vault does not encrypt the source app’s library in place.
A recording and its export are separate items
You save a private voice note as an audio file and put it into another app. The original may still be available in the recording app, while an export remains in Files. Treat those as separate copies, not as one file that magically moved everywhere at once.
Confirm that you have the right to retain and use the material. This guide concerns storage of files you are entitled to keep; it does not provide recording-permission or disclosure advice. Choose a destination suitable for the contents and intended audience.
Verify the complete recording and its format
Use the recording app’s supported export or sharing action. Save the result to a deliberate location and check the duration. Play sections near the beginning, middle, and end to confirm that the file is complete rather than a short preview.
File import support does not guarantee built-in playback of every codec. Keep an independent compatible copy and test the actual destination before removing the original. For a very long recording, check available device space before making another copy.
- Export the recording using the source app’s supported control.
- Save it to a known location and verify duration and playback.
- Import it into your chosen private storage.
- Verify the retained file before managing the source and temporary export.
Check where the source recording synchronizes
The source app may have its own iCloud or account synchronization. Removing an exported copy from Files does not necessarily remove that original. Deleting within the source app can have different effects across synced devices, so read its confirmation.
Notes is not a universal workaround for private audio: restricted attachments can prevent a note from being locked. Use protection that applies to the actual audio file, and retain essential recordings independently.
Store an imported audio file in Octoshield
Octoshield’s file importer can store arbitrary file copies in its encrypted local vault. Check the exact audio format’s preview or export behavior before depending on it; the app is not an audio editor or recorder.
Imported protection does not reach the original recording app. Exports leave the vault, and vault files are excluded from backups with no recovery service. Preserve anything irreplaceable through a separate plan.
Frequently asked questions
01Does vaulting an export delete the recording from its app?+
No. Review the recording app and any Files export separately.
02Can I lock an audio attachment in Apple Notes?+
Apple lists audio among the attachment types that prevent a note from being locked. Choose protection for the actual file instead.
