For similar photos that do not appear in Duplicates, compare the shots yourself and delete only the ones you do not want. Check expressions, sharpness, edits, and resolution before choosing. Apple’s Duplicates collection is not a list of every photo that looks approximately the same.
The best frame is not always the newest one
Six dinner photos can look identical in the grid while one has a clearer face and another includes the friend at the edge. A duplicate finder cannot decide which moment means most to you. Start with a single event so the comparison remains understandable.
Review the pictures at full size and compare the details that matter: eyes open, readable text, focus, composition, and whether an edit removed something useful. Preserve genuinely different moments instead of treating every repeated scene as clutter.
Choose a keeper before selecting the rejects
Mark the best candidate as a favorite if that helps you remember the decision. Then select unwanted alternatives in Photos and review the selection before deleting. An album of keepers is useful organization, but it is not an independent backup.
If the set contains a burst, open the Burst selection workflow instead of guessing from its cover thumbnail. If Photos identifies an actual duplicate set, its Merge feature is a different operation with its own review.
- Open one small run of similar photos.
- Inspect the strongest candidates and identify the keeper.
- Select the alternatives you no longer want, review them, and confirm deletion.
Stop when the distinction becomes uncertain
You do not need to settle every pair in one sitting. Leave uncertain photos for another day, especially if they are irreplaceable or contain a document. Removing an ordinary picture from a synced library also affects its appearance on your other devices.
A recent deletion can normally be reversed through Recently Deleted during the recovery window. That safety net disappears after permanent removal. Do not empty it reflexively at the end of a session if you still feel unsure.
Make the next pass with Octoshield
Octoshield’s card review helps you make a keep-or-delete choice without an endless grid. It uses random batches and shows one photo at a time; it does not automatically group similar shots or provide a side-by-side comparison engine.
Use Photos for detailed comparisons, then Cleaner for the broader review habit. Inspect the deletion queue, undo choices where needed, and vault a sensitive keeper only after verifying its imported copy.
Frequently asked questions
01Why does Duplicates miss my similar selfies?+
Different frames are not necessarily classified as duplicates. Similar-looking images can require manual comparison.
02Does Octoshield automatically pick the best photo?+
No. Cleaner supports your own review decisions; it does not rank image quality or automatically detect duplicates.
