Review Favorites first, keep independent copies of irreplaceable photos, and inspect every deletion selection before confirming. The heart icon is an organizational marker, not a deletion lock. A favorite photo can still be deleted from the library and from iCloud Photos when synchronization is enabled.
A favorite is easy to find, but still deletable
You marked a photo with a heart because it matters. That does not turn it into a protected file. The same photo may appear in Favorites, an ordinary album, and the main library while remaining a single item subject to the library’s delete action.
Before a cleanup, open Favorites and check whether it contains the memories you want to protect. For irreplaceable pictures, export independent copies and open them at their destination. Do not rely on a second album as a backup.
Keep an explicit boundary around the deletion selection
Choose a small group of unwanted images and inspect each selected thumbnail. If a favorite appears, deselect it unless you genuinely want it removed. Avoid a global Select All followed by a rushed attempt to remember which few images should survive.
When comparing near-identical photos, identify a keeper before deleting the alternatives. An ordinary photograph without a heart may still contain an important detail, while an old favorite can legitimately become a reject. Use the marker as a reminder rather than a substitute for judgment.
- Review Favorites and export essential memories independently.
- Select a small batch of unwanted photos.
- Inspect the selection and remove any keepers from it.
- Confirm deletion only after the selection is right.
Know where an accidental deletion goes
Recently Deleted usually provides 30 days to recover an accidental Photos deletion. Recover the item promptly if you notice a mistake. Permanently removing it from that collection or letting the window expire ends the ordinary recovery path.
The same deletion can affect your other devices through iCloud Photos. Do not wait for an iPad to serve as a fallback if it is showing the same synced library. Your verified independent export is the stronger safety measure.
Use Octoshield’s review queue deliberately
With Octoshield, right keeps a photo and left queues deletion. Check the queue before approving the iOS prompt, and undo a choice when necessary. Do not assume Cleaner automatically excludes favorites; its role is to support your manual review.
A sensitive keeper can go into the encrypted local vault instead. Verify the vault copy and handle the Photos original separately; privacy and preservation require different checks.
