Temporary Shared Albums expire after 30 days on supported version 27 devices, but participants can save pictures before expiry. Treat expiry as the end of the hosted album, not a remote wipe of downloaded files. Review the album’s access settings before adding anything sensitive.
Check the version and sharing audience
Apple introduced Temporary Shared Albums in version 27 of its supported operating systems. Availability can vary by country, region, and account. This feature is distinct from an ordinary iCloud Link even though both can have a 30-day lifetime.
When creating the album, inspect Sharing Options. Choosing invited or approved people has a different access model from allowing anyone with the link. A link can be forwarded beyond the conversation where you first sent it.
- Check that your device supports Temporary Shared Albums.
- Create the album in Photos and inspect Sharing Options before adding private pictures.
- Turn on Make Album Temporary only if the limited lifetime suits the task.
- Save any originals you need independently before the album expires.
Expiry does not recall saved photos
An album that disappears can still have been the source of a saved photo, screenshot, or forwarded file. Apple explains that Shared Album content saved to a personal library remains after sharing ends. Do not upload a sensitive document solely because the album is temporary.
For event photos, choose the subset people actually need. Leave personal screenshots and private documents out rather than relying on expiry to correct an overbroad share.
Keep source material private until you choose to share
Octoshield can hold imported private files locally while you select a deliberate share copy. It is appropriate for keeping material out of your everyday library, not for controlling other participants’ downloads.
After you export an image from the vault, the destination’s sharing rules apply. Recheck the exported copy and the album audience before posting. Store essential originals somewhere you can recover them if the phone is lost.
Frequently asked questions
01Is a temporary album a backup?+
No. Its hosted contents expire. Save and verify anything you want to retain before expiry, using a destination that fits your recovery needs.
