Yes. Hidden photos remain in your Photos library and still use storage. Hiding changes visibility, not the file’s size or storage location. With iCloud Photos, local usage depends on optimization settings and cloud originals also count toward iCloud storage. A local vault uses device storage too.
The Hidden album is not an extra storage drive
Moving fifty photos into Hidden makes the main grid look cleaner, but it does not remove their image data from the library. This is useful for keeping a personal image out of casual browsing. It is not the same operation as deleting or moving an independent copy off the phone.
Turning off Show Hidden Album only removes that collection from view. It does not compress, archive, or permanently erase its contents. You can turn the row back on later and authenticate to see the same retained images.
Cloud and device space are different measurements
If iCloud Photos is enabled, the original files remain part of your cloud library. Optimize Storage can keep smaller versions locally when space is needed. That does not make Hidden exempt from storage accounting, and it does not create a separate private cloud area.
Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage for device use and your account’s iCloud storage for cloud use. A large hidden collection might affect both, but you cannot infer the local byte count from its item count alone.
- Check whether your goal is privacy, less visual clutter, or more free space.
- Compare iPhone Storage and iCloud storage separately.
- For space, remove unwanted files or export verified copies off the device.
A private vault changes access, not physical capacity
Importing a photo into a local vault makes another device-local copy. If the source was optimized, importing can first download a larger original and temporarily increase storage use. Removing the Photos original later does not guarantee that the vault version will occupy fewer bytes.
Use an external destination for an off-device archive, and verify those files before removing the phone copies. Keep privacy decisions separate from storage decisions so you do not sacrifice an important original for a saving that never materializes.
Choose Cleaner or Vault in Octoshield for the right reason
Use Octoshield’s Cleaner for unwanted photos you can delete after review. Use the encrypted vault for photos you want to retain behind a separate secret. Right keeps, left queues deletion, and up creates a vault copy while queuing the source.
The vault is excluded from backups and has no recovery service. Export essential items before changing devices, and approve source removal only after you have checked the imported files.
Frequently asked questions
01Does hiding the Hidden album save space?+
No. That setting changes whether the collection is visible in Photos, not whether its files are retained.
02Will moving photos to Octoshield shrink them?+
Octoshield is a local encrypted vault, not a promised photo compressor or off-device storage service.
